There are 10 deaths by suicide each week in VIctoria - over 2,000 per year in Australia.
Road deaths are also a 21st century epidemic. There are more deaths by suicide that by road accidents in Australia each year.
The road toll is news. Daily the figures are updated. All media outlets give us the latest tragedy. Road deaths bring publicity, campaigns, and massive funding.
Yet on suicide we are silent. Our media deal with it in vague and gently ambiguous terms - "No suspicious circumstances". We know what this means but the words lack impact. We can move on, comparatively unaffected.
Where is our outrage at this epidemic?
